It has been a wonderful string of six days here in Seattle. I am amazed at stereotypes/preconceieved notions. Seattle is everything I've heard about it: coffee, outdoorsy people, and rain. However, as I seem to learn and understand things most by comparison, Seattle differs in so many nuanced ways from other cities I know better. Also, so much of an experience can be shaped by the people one knows. So in keeping with the stereoptypes:

coffee. Aaron ordered a cafe macchiato at Cupcake Royale in West Seattle after our sushi-eating and thrift-store shopping. We were sitting in the corner eating our salted caramel cupcakes and he says, "This is the most disgusting thing I've ever had." Aaron doesn't like nor dink coffee--why would he order an espresso? We all tried the drink and agreed that he could slam it down or add sugar. He continued to drink it.
outdoorsy people. So I did see a few people running but it wasn't a crazy amount of over-outdoorsy-ness. What I loved most was that everyone was wearing jeans and in any restaurant no one was wearing uniforms! We went to eat at Trellis in Kirkland and as we were entering I felt underdressed and asked if it was ok to come in wearing jeans. The hostess laughed a little as she told me it was fine.
rain. The rain is awesome.
We've been staying at Hotel Max for the last two nights (after our not-so-great apartment in Capitol Hill.) Hotel Max is a fabulous hotel close to downtown that has a lot of great art in it--each floor has a different photographer's work on each door, and every room has a work of art in it. Good art in a room can really make a difference in an experience.
It's been great here--can't wait to get home and can't wait to come back.
